Fishlab

Food Inspection Laboratory

Scopri di più

FishLab is a laboratory within the Department of Veterinary Sciences at the University of Pisa, specializing in the field of Food Inspection. It was established in 2012.

The laboratory focuses primarily on the safety and traceability of fishery products. Its core activities include scientific research and support for companies in the fishery sector through the provision of analytical services.

FishLab is also involved in academic teaching and scientific outreach. A key aspect of its mission is fostering scientific collaborations, with the goal of building a network of partners at both European and international levels to enhance the quality of research in the sector.

What we do

Research

Scientific research represents the laboratory’s first mission and is mainly aimed at assessing the identity, quality, safety and sustainability of food of animal origin and a constant update on the sector’s regulations Through active participation in research projects financed by public and private bodies and companies in the area, the laboratory also modulates research lines on the basis of emerging issues. Research results are used for the production of scientific publications necessary to ensure international visibility.

Scientific collaboration

Collaboration with other research institutes is an essential aspect of raising the quality of scientific research. The laboratory aims to become a meeting point for all those who are interested in research topics in various ways. Students, trainees, researchers and professors can carry out research activities within the framework of mobility periods (European and international) or scientific projects. In addition, the laboratory staff is involved in the transfer of ‘know-how’ through on-site training of personnel working in molecular laboratories for species identification.

Academic teaching

The laboratory constitutes an essential element for the performance of the practical work necessary for the correct acquisition of knowledge and skills by students on the course of Inspection and Control of Products of Animal Origin and Practical Work in Slaughterhouses in the 4th year of the Veterinary Medicine degree course. Activities necessary for the preparation of experimental theses, both undergraduate and postgraduate, are also carried out in the laboratory. Finally, it welcomes students of different grades and levels for practical work experience.

Scientific Disclosure

The dissemination of scientific knowledge to society is fundamental to the transmission of knowledge and is one of the fundamental tasks of the university. By means of popular publications, television and radio interviews and participation in public events, the laboratory aims to bring society closer to research topics concerning food safety and the traceability of fishery products.

Business Services

Thanks to the experience gained over the years, the laboratory is able to offer support to companies in the fisheries sector in relation to the molecular characterisation of products before they are placed on the market, the verification of information on accompanying documents and the verification of suppliers. Services for companies are a fundamental element in the growth of the laboratory, which, through dialogue with the local area, is able to activate specific projects aimed at solving problems in the sector. Similar services can also be activated on request for other public or private research institutes.
